Betta splendens originate from Thailand (Kingdom of Siam),
and can also be found in some of the surrounding regions.

The map to the left shows Thailand and the surrounding regions.

In nature bettas are found in the paddy-field, in puddles and
ponds.

When two males are placed together they will fight, in Thailand
this would be bet upon, sometimes large sums of money are
gambled during such fights.
Hence their common name - Siamese Fighting Fish.

Some of these arenas and competitions continue to the current
day in Thailand as it is an important part of Thai culture.

Later a variety of betta splendens were cultured with beautiful
colouration and long flowing fins, these also became a very popular
fish as a pet.

These bettas were called Veiltails ( VT )

This is the father of my final VT spawn

I also bred his parents & grandparents before him.

Veiltails weren't used for fighting as their long fins made them vulnerable to the much shorter finned and
compact betta known as the Plakat, so here the 2 varieties are seperate in their purpose and the
breeding of them was also for different purposes.

Marble Giant Plakat

Amongst many aquarists there is the wish to learn about the species that they keep and the desire to
breed their fish is an integral part of the hobby for them.

Several other tail formations were born from selected breeding programs.

One of the newer tail formations is the Crowntail ( CT ), this tail type was created by an Asian breeder.

White Male Crowntail (CT)

This male is one of our fry from many spawns back now that we grew on to see if he had potential for a breeding program, we decided against breeding him but kept him as a pet.

Opaque White Female (CT)

This young female had a nice character and was full of energy,we decided against breeding her but kept
her as a pet.
