Buenos Aires Tetra (Female)

The Buenos Aires Tetra - Hemigrammus caudovittatus, originates from Argentina, Brazil and some surrounding areas within the region.
They grow to 2-3" in length.
I keep these at a temperature of 25C with a PH 7, filtration is provided by an internal power filter.
I feed them flake as a staple, they are not fussy feeders.
They are very tolerant of tank parameters and health wise they are hardy fish.

I have kept a group of 6 of these for about 2 years now, they are generally very sociable community fish, they are an active swimmer and not shy when being viewed.

They do have a bad habit of grabbing a leaf and tearing it off a live plant, they do not eat the leaf.
They damaged my Giant Vallis quite badly but I have noticed they do not pull off the leaves of Java ferns or Crypts, they pull the ocassional leaf from the Thai stricta but it thrives nonetheless.
So its best to use strong leafed plants when furnishing their aquarium or artificial plants if you prefer, they also like rocks and ornaments to swim around.
They need a good sized swimming area, a 3ft length aquarium is suitable, with a filter providing a strong outflow current as they like to swim in the strong currents.

The males are a more slender fish with the females having a much more rounded ventral contour and a deeper body.
I have not bred these fish, although I have seen them spawning in the community tank very often.
If you make a 40% water change the next day in the early evening you will notice them spawning heavily over the plants in the mid-water range of the tank depth, its very predictable and they are not difficult to induce into spawning in this way.
